Green Building Tax Incentives: Special Rule for Government-Owned Buildings Could Pass Big Tax Savings to You! Are you performing work on buildings owned by a government, school or municipality? There are several federal tax incentives for designing and constructing energy efficient buildings. The tax incentives typically go to the building owner; however, if the owner is a government agency (that doesn’t pay taxes), they can allocate the deduction to the person primarily responsible for designing the property. This could be an architect, engineer, contractor, environmental consultant or energy services provider. You may be eligible for a deduction of up to $1.80 per square foot for energy efficient features of a building’s construction or retrofit.
